In fact, as we know, Wenck’s army had yet to make a start and Steiner’s seven battalions had already been routed.

Late that evening Hitler made some command decisions that showed that he had completely recovered from his breakdown of the 22nd. He drafted an order for publication the next day that read:

1. The OKW is responsible to me for the conduct of all operations.

2. It will issue orders in accordance with my instructions, which I shall transmit through the OKH Chief-of-Staff now with me.

3. Command Staff ‘A’ under Grand Admiral Dönitz will not assume its function until notified by me.

4. The main task of the OKW is to re-establish contact with Berlin by attacking from the southwest, northeast and south, thus bringing the battle of Berlin to a victorious conclusion.
